Project Tango: an exploration into giving mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion.

5 years ago, Written by , Posted in Uncategorized

Now this will be a game changer. Oh the possibilities!

“The future is awesome.

We believe we can get there faster if we build it together.

Project Tango is an attempt to create a mobile device unlike like any other, a mobile device that shares our sense of space and movement, that understands and perceives the world the same way we do.

We have been collaborating with universities, research labs, and industrial partners who share this passion spanning 9 countries around the world to concentrate the past 10 years of research in robotics and computer vision into a unique mobile phone. We now have prototypes ready to put into the hands of eager development partners that can help us imagine the possibilities and to transform those ideas into reality.

We hope that you will take this journey with us. We believe it will be one worth travelling.

What is it?

Our current prototype is a 5” Android phone containing highly customized hardware and software designed to track the full 3-dimensional motion of the device as you hold it while simultaneously creating a map of the environment. These sensors allow the phone to make over a quarter million 3D measurements every second updating its position and orientation in real-time combining that data into a single 3D model of the space around you.

What can I do with it?

What if you could walk into a store and see exactly where that thing you need to buy is, or play hide-and-seek in your home with that character from your favorite game, or help the visually-impaired navigate that place they have never been able to to go on their own?

We believe the possibilities are vast.

Where can I get one?

The early prototypes that we have today are not quite ready for everyone and certainly have their rough edges. But, they are in the hands of developers eager to explore new technologies, test its boundaries, and participate in its evolution. We have already shared all of the devices we have at this time. But, pay attention to this space as we post updates.

What’s next?

We are still in the early days as this technology starts to transition out of the research labs into the hands of millions of people. While we may believe we know where it may go, history suggests we should be humble in our opinions. We are excited to see the road ahead of us take shape with each step forward.

The future is awesome. Let’s build it together.”
